Princess Juliana Airport on St. Maarten on the Netherlands Antilles is a place of pilgrimage for aviation enthusiasts from all over the world. Only a small beach and a narrow road separate the runway from the Atlantic Ocean. This setting guarantees for some spectacular and almost unreal images when heavy jets from Europe or North America soar incredibly low over the beach onto the runway. But not only the approaches over “Maho Beach” are a huge event. Quite a few people get their ultimate kicks from the jet blasts at takeoff by grabbing the airport fence, trying not to get blown into the water. Once in a while, this even results in some heavy burns.
