The Portuguese island of Madeira is not only because of its scenery exceptional. Also exceptional is the way how the airport fought the aviation hostile winds on Madeira. Passengers on approach for Madeira are still being frequently reminded that gentle breezes aren't really the predominant winds on the island. However, the relocation of the runway managed to reduce the danger of wind shears significantly. As Funchal airport is on hilly shore side terrain, about one third of the new runway is carried by a worldwide unique bridge construction. Dozens of cement columns make sure that even heavy aircraft like Boeing 747 can securely operate. Yet even everyday's smaller movements on the construction are a real sight – though only if the eyes of the spectator aren't drawn to another shaky approach already.
